Monty on the Run Suite
R. Hubbard, 1956-
Written by Peter Harrap and converted by Jason Perkins to the Commodore 64, this originally politically-charged game cast Monty Mole in the role of wanted criminal. Belatedly receiving a flyer Rob Hubbard sent out in 1984 to games companies offering his musical skills, Jason rang Rob Hubbard to get him on board the game "Thing on a Spring".
Having delivered in spades, Monty on the Run was his next job: originally asked by Peter Harrap to do a conversion of "Devil's Galop", Rob pushed back on that and turned it into a much-loved pastiche instead. When he rewrote his code to do pitch bends, he added a guitar solo section just because: which proved to be an issue when it came to orchestrate! Monty on the Run is a jewel in Rob's crown, and is still something he's proud of to this day!
This orchestration is regarded as the flagship orchestration of the 8-Bit Symphony score collection: not only because it has a wide range of orchestral colour palettes, but because the frantic cartoon feel (and even the name of the piece) fit nicely into the preconceptions of 8-bit music for audiences unfamiliar with the original. It's also intricately arranged, musically varied and challenging!
The middle section of the arrangement has a new section that's dream-sequence-like. The concept is that Monty is dreaming and appearing as a cameo in other films and entertainment. For instance, as an Ewok in "Return of the Jedi". Functionally it replaces the un-portable rock section in the original with something far more idiomatic.
Monty on the Run was also always going to be included in "The C64 Orchestra" project, targeted at small ensemble, and resources for that version are presented here too.
