"Zoids" was inspired by, and is considered a variation on, the piece "Ancestors" by electronic project "Synergy" (composer Larry Fast, from his 1981 "Audion" album). "Zoids" and its sister piece "Master of Magic" (inspired by the track "Shibolet" from the same album) were produced by Rob Hubbard back-to-back during the same month of July 1985. Together they represent an inflexion point in Rob's career. This is because he was so inspired by the source material and by the process of massively augmenting it and implementing it on the three-voice sound chip, that he overcame previous reservations about what, musically, could be achieved on the chip. His realisation that full, ambitious soundtracks and full musical ideation were possible in the limited technology proved transformative. Zoids on the C64 featured sounds and effects that hadn't been heard before anywhere.

This Zoids arrangement shares stylistic roots with Holst's "Mars" and John Wiliams' "Imperial March".
